Power Output/Charging Rate

The EV Pro Earth charging unit sits at 230V AC, and through a 32A single-phase input the charger can provide up to 7.3kW of power output.

This adds up to about 28 miles (~50km) of driving time per hour of charging!

This means that if you need to whip out for an errand, but the car is sitting on empty, it will only take an hour of charging to allow you to nip out locally.

An output of 7.4kw is the fastest charging rate for single phase smart chargers, however at 7.3kW you wont see a huge difference in charging speed.

When you’re not using your charger, it runs at a standby power consumption of 8W per hour- which is certainly nothing that you would need to be concerned about.

CONNECTOR TYPE

Like many of its contemporaries, the EV Pro Earth accepts Type 2 socket cables (Untethered unit).

However, one unique function that this charging unit provides is a cable-locking socket which is located on the side of the device.

With this, you can keep the charger locked into the tethered unit and locked away safely.

This is awesome for those that prefer the practicality of an untethered cable, as it saves you from having to wind and put away the cord every time you’ve finished charging!

Size & Dimensions

With the dimensions of W 240mm x H 380mm x 145mm d, it is a big unit for sure.

While there are a few chargers that are larger in size, the EV Pro Earth is undoubtedly one of the thickest boxes on the market.

For those that are looking for a unit that subtly compliments the exterior of a home, the size of this unit may be a turn-off.

DESIGN

So now that we’ve marvelled at the charger’s size, the next step is to look at what actually is taking up all of that space!

The design of the product has some fantastic, unique features, made possible through its chunky size.

A red emergency stop button sits on the side of the charging unit, which is a safety feature that is rarely seen on other chargers. There is also the cable locking socket that was mentioned above.

Alongside these factors, the LED status light display is sizable, and easy to understand and read at any time of the day.

Again, this is very welcome, as many smart chargers go too far in trying to produce a complex LED language system to communicate simple things.

For this bulky beast of a charger, there is a complimentary wall-mounting bracket which gives you the option to mount it on a pole or a wall.

The internal engineering is prefigured and of high quality, which makes the installation really easy (and your electrician’s bill a lot smaller!).

Now, there are also some rather obvious downsides.

This smart charger is not quite as stylish as some of its peers on the market, rejecting modern design trends of flat angles and hard corners.

There are two colourways, though we recommend the all-black model as it hides a bit more of the aesthetic interface through its singular colourway.

On the other hand, the silver and black colourway comes across as a little retrofuturistic – evoking some 1980s sci-fi imagery with the curvy silver encasement around the glass.

While this may appeal to some, it does not fit the common purpose of charger design- which is of course to create a sleek device that blends into domestic environments!

CONNECTIVITY

The charger comes with Wi-Fi and ethernet connectivity, with the option to add 4G separately. If you choose to use ethernet, you will have to get it wired in during installation.

For those that wish to add 4G, it will require purchasing an EV-4G module- unless you buy the specified 4G unit.

Unfortunately, unlike some of its peers, this charger has no integrated SIM card. This means that to use 4G, you will have to buy a SIM card that has data.

Earth Rod & Weather Proofing

The Pro Earth lives up to its name, with its own integrated earth spike built in. This protects both you and the charger from situations of over-voltage or short-circuiting!

The large model shape of this charger does have some other perks, many of which relate to the quality and longevity of the unit.

With a robust weatherproof design, full electrical protection, over/under temperature protection, and a weathering rating of IP65, you can sleep assured when the storms hit that your outside appliance will be safe throughout the night.

WHO ARE PROJECT EV?

Project EV is an electric vehicle charger company that aims to be the preferred choice in the UK and Europe for EV charging solutions.

Harnessing leading technology and prioritising human service, its mission is to create the most advanced smart solutions for all customers, resellers, and manufacturers.

Their products come with 3-5 year warranties depending on the unit.

SOLAR COMPATIBILITY

Yes! For those that are ready to utilise their free power from sunny days, you will be glad to hear that EV Pro Earth is completely solar-compatible and can be used in conjunction with existing solar installations.

PROJECT EV PRO EARTH TARIFF INTEGRATION

The application can optimise for off-peak charging, which works alongside your power company’s tariff.

CHARGE SCHEDULING

Organising your life around a charging schedule can make managing things a lot easier. Thankfully, Project EV has a charge schedule calendar available on their app.

The calendar allows you to set multiple schedules, all at different customised charging rates.

Those that don’t enjoy scheduling their life on apps will find the EV Pro’s Plug and Play charger mode easy enough.

All that is required is your charging cable! Simply plug the cable into your car, and the green light on your unit will indicate that you’re juicing up.

APP CONTROL

Alongside the size, the software that comes with the Project Pro Earth is where a lot of the grumbles are.

Unfortunately, smart products with good hardware are severely hindered by their software if it doesn’t live up to par. The reviews of the app score poorly with users with issues ranging from connectivity problems to a poor user interface.

LOAD BALANCING

The EV Pro Earth does have the capacity to load balance.

This ensures that the power of your home is evenly distributed across the different electrical appliances that are running, and mitigates the risk of any damage occurring.
