If you’ve recently capitalised on the surge of new electrics or plug-in hybrids on the market, you’re going to need a good smart charger at home. You could do worse than consider the BG Sync EV charger as your in-home charging station. The Sync EV is a straightforward install, with excellent charging speed, plus plenty of small quality-of-life features that makes it feel great to use. It has a max charge of 7.4 KW/H, or roughly 30 miles of travel per hour, the highest rate possible for all single phase chargers.

SYNC EV APP

Additionally, you can adjust the charging rate using the app. Which charging rate you choose depends on your type of car.

It’s gentler on a hybrid’s battery to use the 16-Amps setting, or if you have a full electric you can crank it up to 32-Amps for a faster charge.

This adjustability is also amazing for solar panel compatibility. If your home is running solar panels, and you want to adjust the Amperage to match the solar PV, it’s all there in the app.

The Sync App is relatively straightforward to use, and the devs seem to update and improve it every couple of months.

It is still quite basic, and there is room for improvement in the software area, but it seems like regular updates are occurring (which is a great sign).

If you do run into bugs or just need help navigating the app, online reviews seem to show that their customer support is very responsive.

SIZE & SOCKET TYPE

The design is basic, a simple box, in white or black, featuring an LED light ring which it uses to convey charging status.

  •  Solid blue means the charger is ready to go.
  • Solid green with a slight pulse means the unit is charging.
  • Blue/green pulsing means the unit is in a scheduled mode.
  • Red indicates a charger fault.

Not flashy, but not altogether ugly, either. It is also very small, only 90mm across, and you can buy an even smaller model if you choose to go with Sync EV’s Socket Charger, which is the smallest on the market.

Sync EV chargers use universal sockets unless you get the 7.5 metre tethered charger, which has a type 2 cable.

RFID AND CONNECTIVITY

You do lose out on some features if you decide to go with the smallest size car charger.

The standard size Sync EV has RFID functionality, meaning it’s straightforward to lock and unlock your charger, without needing your phone- provided you keep the keycard handy.

The charger is compatible with either WiFi, 4G, or ethernet, which it requires to connect to the app.

If you want to use 4G, you will have to provide your own SIM card. If you choose WiFi, then breaks in your WiFi connection (which do happen occasionally), can cause errors in the app.

Ethernet has none of these problems, but does have the issue of you needing to run an ethernet cable potentially quite a long way. Make sure to choose wisely when it comes to the connection type that will suit you best!

SOLAR COMPATIBILITY & TARIFF INTEGRATION

The Sync EV app is what makes this a truly smart device. You can schedule charges or adjust the amperage of the charger just by using the app.

The app has a simplistic design, but it works. It allows you to take advantage of EV tariff periods, and makes it easier to use if you have solar panels.

Additionally, the app collates data and creates graphs to showcase how your usage compares to previous days and months.
