The smart technology of modern electric vehicle charging equipment often comes attached with a bit of jargon, so let’s break down each element of the Easee One in order to see what the specifications really mean for this Scandinavian unit.
POWER OUTPUT/CHARGING RATE
As electric vehicles become more popular, we are beginning to expect more and more out of their capability to keep us moving.
That’s why it’s important to find a unit that has an adequate amount of charging power- so that we can efficiently get from A to B!
Thankfully, the Easee One is more than capable.
With a charging power of 1.4-7kW, it means that at a full-powered charge, you will be getting about 28-30 miles of drive time per hour (~50km p/h).
CONNECTOR TYPE
Living up to its name, the Easee One makes things simple here, accepting any Type 2 cable that you have on hand.
The unit locks the cable in place, meaning that you’re unlikely to come out in the morning to find an uncharged car with a loose connection cable. This makes the unit both a tethered and untethered option.
Having the flexibility to adapt to any Type 2 cable means that you have the agency to choose the length of your line, and whether you want it tethered or untethered.
This flexibility is fantastic, as it means you’re not locked to a unit with an unnecessarily long 10m charging cord! Some suppliers include a cable as part of the purchase although this is not standard so check with the installer you are purchasing from first.
SIZE & DIMENSIONS
Size is important- especially when it comes to placing a rather conspicuous electric box on the side of your house or business property.
The Easee One measurements are H: 256mm x W: 193mm x D: 106mm, meaning that it is a relatively average-sized unit for domestic charging.
Despite this, its triangular physique makes it feel a little smaller than the traditional rectangular charging unit.
DESIGN
Norway has a history of producing innovative and sleek designs, without disqualifying the need for quality materials.
Lucky for us, the Norwegian team at Easee have kept the legacy alive, as this unit is slick!
With a matte angular face, it opens up to the charging point at the bottom of the unit where all the angles meet, which gives the charger an intentional, solid appearance.
If the minimal design isn’t enough to sway any aesthete’s reading, perhaps realising that it comes in five different colours will.
Available in black, carbon grey, white, navy blue, and crimson red, Easee have addressed one of the biggest gripes we have at the moment with monotone single-colour designs.
While the color of your unit may seem like a small factor, it goes a long way in matching your environment to create either a seamless or sleek appearance for your home.
LED LIGHT STRIP
There is one design feature that Easee included that perhaps went a little too far on the innovation scale.
While it is cool and minimalistic, the complex LED light strip status display takes quite a bit of getting used to.
This LED strip indicates the status of the charger, and it’s charging session with your vehicle.
There are many different modes that it displays, and it is the only means of comprehending the status of the charger unless you check the app.
The modes are as follows:
- White light solid but half-full– charger on standby
- White light flashing but half-full – unit searching for master unit
- White light solid and full – the car is connected
- White light pulsing – charging in progress
- Blue light solid – smart charging enabled
- Blue light pulsing – smart charging in progress
- White light flashing – RFID tag authentication
- Red light – general error
- Red light with warning sounds – broken PEN or wiring fault
- Red light pulsing – abnormal temperature, charger in safe mode
- Yellow light flashing – the charging unit needs configuring
As you can see: It can get rather complicated!
CONNECTIVITY
The Easee One covers all bases on the connectivity front, with an integrated 4G eSim in each box, with a free subscription for life.
There is also the possibility to connect via WiFi if that takes your fancy!
EARTH ROD BUILT IN
Installation is eased with a few key features of this charger, including integrated open PEN conductor protection.
This means that you won’t require an earth rod, resulting in less stress on hardware logistics and a smoother process overall.
WHO ARE EASEE?
Established in 2018 by three Norwegian entrepreneurs, the team was focused on trying to produce the world’s smartest electric vehicle charger.
This is a goal they continue to work towards as they invoke their products with innovative technological solutions to try and produce a seamless charging and power management service.
The company now has 400+ employees and is based in the UK, the Netherlands and Germany, and it exports its products to 17 European countries.
With ambitions of becoming one of the largest green technology companies in the world within 2031, it would seem that Easee is not here just to play around in a developing market.
IS THE EASEE ONE SOLAR COMPATIBLE?
This is a particularly interesting reservation considering their declared commitment to green technology! We hope to see future Easee chargers integrate better with solar and other renewable energy sources like the Zappi Charger for example.
We would also like to see automatic EV tariff optimization in future models which will become a more and more important feature given the cost of electricity rises we have seen rises recently.
CHARGER SCHEDULING
Like most smart chargers today, the Easee One has scheduling options that allow you to have comprehensive control over your charging routine.
Functions include making a weekly charging plan or delaying the start time of a charging session.
The charging schedules can be created, edited, and adapted all in the Easee app, which we will talk about next!
APP CONTROL
Considering application software is one of the biggest problem areas in the electric vehicle charging sphere, it is nice to be offered respite with Easee’s comprehensive app.
When looking at the design of the unit, it comes as no surprise that the software used to operate it is equally clean, minimal, and functional.
Some of the functions and features offered by the app include:
- Monthly reports of kWh usage, alongside graphs to show your power spikes
- Lifetime readouts of kWh, to know how much you’ve used in the long run
- Delegation of the power (W) and currents used while charging
- Start, stop, and pause charging controls
- Set permanent cable lock for tethered charging
- Create, edit, and delete charging schedules
LOAD BALANCING
One of the biggest features is the dynamic load balancing the Easee one Charger provides. With this, you can actually have up to 101 chargers on one circuit. Ok this may not be needed for your average home but this does mean you are future-proofed as you add more electric cars
